Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival 2018

YorkfestSquarePNG Yorkfest is a weekend-long premier fine arts festival hosted by the City of York! It is held along the Codorus Creek in historic downtown York, and features over 100 fine artists from all around the country, free entertainment and hands-on art activities. Creative York is excited to once again partner with the City of York for the Adult Juried Exhibition, Adult Literary Competition, and Youth Art Exhibition components of Yorkfest. We are also hosting Chalk Walk, as well as hosting the Creative York Family Courtyard with free creative activities!

Artist Awards announced at 6:30pm, followed by the winners of the YorkFest Adult Literary Competition at 7pm.

DETAILS: This year’s Juror, Laura Amussen, has selected a wonderful exhibition featuring works by the following artists: Shane Lewis Bahn (York, PA), Tina Berrier (Enola PA), Taylor Bielecki (Royersford, PA), Rosa Luz Catterall (York, PA), ZeeLinda Dissinger (Carlisle, PA), Steph Holmes (Marietta, PA), Michael Hower (Enola, PA), Carla B. Long (Hanover, PA), Christine Mercer-Vernon (York, PA), Carol Oldenburg (York, PA), Kara Oldenburg-Gonzales (York, PA), and Alyssa Waller (Lewisberry, PA).

About our 2018 Juror:

LauraAmussenBWLaura Amussen was born in Auburn, CA in 1973. She spent most of her life in Salt Lake City, UT until she moved to Baltimore, MD in 1995. Since graduating from MICA, Rinehart School of Sculpture in 2006 Amussen has been an active participant in the local art scene. She teaches full time at Towson University in the Art Department and is an independent curator. She was the director of exhibitions and curator at Goucher College for over ten years.

Ms. Amussen is the recipient of numerous grants, awards and honors. She was awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship, which paid up to $50,000 per year for the length of her graduate studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art, as well as the Jacob K. Javits Graduate Fellowship, and a Maryland Institute College of Art Fellowship. She was chosen as one of ten finalists by juror, Mary Ceruti, Executive Director, SculptureCenter, New York, for the 2007 Miami University Young Sculptors Competition, William and Dorothy Yeck Award of $10,000. She received an Andy Warhol Grant through Appalachian State University. Amussen has also received grants from the Maryland State Arts Council. And has been a semi-finalist for the Trawick Prize multiple times.

Her work has exhibited internationally, and has been featured and reviewed in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, The New York Times, City Paper, The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine, Maryland Life, and The Washington Post.

Amussen lives in Parkville, MD with her son.

About our 2018 Adult Literary Competition Juror:
Vito Grippi is an Adjunct Instructor at York College where he teaches Analytical Reading and Writing, Academic Writing, and Introduction to Creative Writing. He writes Fiction, Short Story, and Creative Nonfiction. He is highly published in various literary publications. Vito is a Digital Editor for Story Magazine Online. He owns Story Supply Company and gives back to the community by donating sketch books and journals to York City Schools. He also teaches writing workshops at the York County Juvenile Detention Center. He is currently serving as the Poet Laureate of York.

About our 2018 Youth Literary Competition Juror:
Carol Clark Williams is poet laureate emeritus of York, Pennsylvania and a rostered artist for the Arts in Education StART Something. She teaches poetry workshops in high schools, libraries, prisons, support groups, and halfway houses. She has recently received the Above and Beyond award from the National Federation of State Poetry Societies for her work with young people. Carol’s poems have been published in print and online journals including Mad Poets Review, Margie, Byline, Passager, The Pedestal, and Bent Pin Quarterly. She has authored two poetry books: Escaped Without Injury and Stories of the Tribe.

About our 2018 Youth Art Competition Juror:
Samantha Heck is a local artist who graduated from Kutztown University with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts in 2014. Since then she has been involved in many programs that allow her to work closely with two things that bring her joy, art and children. She plans on pursuing a masters degree in Psychology to continue to become a great role model and mentor for youth.

Chalk Walk

Watch artists create giant works of art on the sidewalks of downtown York right before your eyes!

2018 Chalk Walk Sidewalk Mural Competition
Time: Saturday, August 25 from 10 am – 5 pm
Location: 100 Block of W Market St, between Pershing & Beaver Sts

Watch artists create giant works of art on the sidewalks of downtown York on Saturday, August 25 from 10-4:30 as part of the YorkFest Arts Festival! Vote on your favorite for the Peoples’ Choice Award winner! The chalk murals will begin at the 100 block of West Market Street and Pershing Ave, and will extend east on Market.

Creative York is partnering with YorkFest to present Chalk Walk 2018. Chalk Walk is an exciting event designed to celebrate the creativity of artists and promote the importance of public art. The sidewalks of downtown York become an artist’s canvas and a place for audiences to watch works of art being created right before their eyes. Money raised from the event will be used to benefit youth art programs.

PRIZES:
The completed murals will be judged and prizes will be awarded as follows…

  • HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (Grades 9-12)
    “Top Chalk”: $200 cash prize & a traveling trophy for one year.
  • ADULTS (age 18 & over)
    “Top Chalk”: $200 cash prize & a traveling trophy for one year.
  • PEOPLE’S CHOICE
    A “People’s Choice” award of $100 is given to the mural that receives the most votes. Audience members will be invited to vote for their favorite Chalk Walk mural. The mural with the most votes at the end of the day wins, so encourage your friends & family to come out and support you!
  • JUDGE’S CHOICE
    An award of $100 will be given at the discretion of the judging panel.
