Let’s work on writing the best poems in the world, using writing prompts and word banks! If it’s a question of permissions–this Caroline Bergvall poem answers: ‘Try anything!” Perhaps we should think of poetry as extreme freedom within poetic constraints.

Carol Clark Williams will be teaching and inviting your responses to experimental by Bergvall, Kearney and Morgan– also other imposed constraints like redaction poetry (or black-out poetry) and Oulipo.. As always, the workshop will begin with a discussion of how poetry differs from prose, and we will prove that through examples and writing prompts.

May Poetry Workshop: Did You Say “Villan”?

Friday, May 12th, from 6-7:30pm

Non-Member Price: $25.00
Age: 15+
Instructor: Carol Clark Williams

To study a further exploration of forms, we will look at the villanelle and the pantoum, poems whose beauty and meaning depends on “making a beautiful noise” with repetition. After analyzing some examples of the forms, the group will work together to construct their own villanelle and pantoum, and then go on to individual experiments in the form. Again, no worries–we’ve got “cheat sheets” to facilitate the creation of these poems. You do not need to have attended the formal poetry workshop in order to participate in this one.
